Today, their primary missions are national defense and high tech research and development. All walks of life are found here. From the metropolitan lifestyle along the Rio Grande corridor and major cities, to the rural lifestyle found throughout the rest of the state. Agriculture is still a major economic engine for the state. Some of the largest ranches in the country are here and New Mexico is in the top 5 Dairy producing states in the union.

As Fall eases in, fiestas, festivals, wine tasting, the roasting of green chili (chile), county fairs and the New Mexico State Fair, The International Balloon Fiesta and some of the best big game hunting in the nation are available. Winter months bring day and night free-style snow skiing and boarding, snowmobiling, ice fishing and wildlife viewing.
